Kitchen is done

June 26th, 2008 at 06:10 am

Cabinets painted. New hardware. Walls textured. Walls painted. Backsplash painted. Window sills painted. Floor laid. Everything is spotless.

Er, one last thing I have to decide if I want to do or not. Currently I don't have curtains up. I don't know if I should put them up or just let the light shine through with no curtains. Depending on what I decide there, I still need to figure out what to do with the old door thingy hiding the hot water heater. If I put up curtains, I'll make a curtain for that. If not, we might paint it, but it is soooo greasy because it is by the stove that it is gross. We couldn't get it clean when we were doing the cabinets. Maybe make a new door out of some scrap wainscoting I have? But nothing else in the kitchen is wainscoted. Still haven't decided.

Here is what the kitchen looks like:

Now, on to the living room!

Very nice. I like the ample cabinet space and the windows that will provide lots of light. What a great feeling of accomplishment to have done this yourself.

i love the white cabinets! thats a big trend right now and i am loving it. Can you tell me how many coats of paint it took to get them white? How much $$ it took to get them white?

gamecock42: We took the doors down, the drawers out, took the hardware off, sanded them and then did one coat of Kilz and two coats of paint. But, you might look at adding a coat of enamel or something to make the top coat harder. If I was doing this for me instead of for show, I would make sure to do that so it would stand up to more wear and tear. Actually, as for how much it cost, we used left over Kilz and left over trim paint from another project! Kilz is about $13 a gallon here, paint probably $20? Had to get more sand paper and tack clothes as well. And new hinges...the pulls were already there (even though they were lost in that sea of brown). And, let the cabinets open for quite a few days before shutting them. Even though it is dry to the touch, if you close them all the way when you open them again they will peel some of the paint off. We had to retouch some of them because of this.
